Dynamic Change of Server Assignments in Distributed Workflow Management Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Workflow management systems (WfMS) offer a promising approach for realizing process-oriented information systems. Central WfMS, with a single server controlling all workflow (WF) instances, however, may become overloaded very soon. In the literature, therefore, many approaches suggest using a multi-server WfMS with distributed WF control. In such a distributed WfMS, the concrete WF server for the control of a particular WF activity is usually defined by an associated server assignment. Following such a partitioning approach, problems may occur if components (WF servers, subnets, or gateways) become overloaded or break down. As we know from other fields of computer science, a favorable approach to handle such cases may be to dynamically change hardware assignment. This corresponds to the dynamic change of server assignments in WfMS. This paper analyses to what extend this approach is reasonable in such situations.

Efficient Distributed Workflow Management Based on Variable Server Assignments
For enterprise-wide and cross-enterprise workflow (WF) applications, the load of the WF servers and the amount of communication in the subnets may become a bottleneck. This paper shows how a distributed WF control can be realized in a way that the load of the components at run time is minimized. For that purpose, the control of a WF instance may migrate from one WF server to another. The WF ser...
متن کاملA distributed server architecture supporting dynamic resource provisioning for BPM-oriented workflow management systems
Workflow management systems have been widely used in many business process management (BPM) applications. There are also a lot of companies offering commercial software solutions for BPM. However, most of them adopt a simple client/server architecture with one single centralized workflow-management server only. As the number of incoming workflow requests increases, the single workflow-managemen...
متن کاملA Fully Distributed Architecture for Large Scale Workflow Enactment
Standard client-server workflow management systems are usually designed as clientserver systems. The central server is responsible for the coordination of the workflow execution and, in some cases, may manage the activities database. This centralized control architecture may represent a single point of failure, which compromises the availability of the system. We propose a fully distributed and...
متن کاملA Distributed Server Architecture for Dynamic Services
A prototype system for distributed dynamic services to be applied in the developments of data Grids for high-energy physics is presented. The systems we are designing and developing gather, disseminate and coordinate configuration, time-dependent state and other information in the Grid system as a whole. These systems are being developed as an enabling technology for workflow-management and oth...
